Headingley Arts Trail

I've managed to take a proper photograph of this latest painting, Mickleden 2, which is about to be packed off and delivered for the next weekend's Headingley Arts Trail. I'll be there on Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon and I'm at location number 3 which is Hollydene, 58 Otley Road.

This year's arts trail will be held on 28, 29 and 30th May and, as in previous years, I will be exhibiting at 6 Harold Place. The house will be open from 10.00 am until 5.00 pm.

Dry-point and lino...

I've been taking a printing class at Leeds College of Art since September and have been experimenting with the different approaches to printing such as dry-point, lino and etching. I've used the same image to see the benefits of different styles. First images is created using dry-point technique and the second image is a lino-cut.

Langdale Pikes - New Work

I started this painting before the arts trail in September but have only just managed to find the time to finish it. It's a part of the Lake District that I keep coming back to paint and those of you who are familiar with my work will recognise the peaks - I painted a similar image (below) of the Langdale Pikes 4 years ago. This new painting of the Langdale Pikes is based on a photograph taken in March 2009 after snow had fallen over night.

Saltaire Arts Trail 2010

This year's Saltaire arts trail will be running from 11 - 19 September and the open houses will be open on the weekends of the 11 & 12 and 18 & 19 September from 10.00 am until 5.00 pm.

I am working on new paintings especially for the arts trail - a bit of a mix of landscapes, mainly the Lake District, in various sizes. The larger paintings which were exhibited at Penrith will also be on exhibition so long as the weather holds out... they're probably too big to exhibit in the house especially as we have 7 other artists and their work to accommodate as well.

September's Arts Trail

So we're going to be back again in September with an even bigger show at 6HP! There will be some of the usual suspects exhibiting with me, Ian Burdall, Kerry Mosely and Eric Moss as well as another 4 artists who will be revealed very shortly.

I'm sure those of you who keep an eye on what's going on with the Saltaire Arts trail will be aware that September will be a slightly different event and will be focusing on publicising the move to a May slot from next year. This means there are less houses in the trail and those houses that are opening will be packed to the rafters with the "best of" artists from the last three years.

So our plan to reduce our workload this year with the open house - we were hoping to go for a more minimalist approach - has really gone out of the window as we have 8 artists exhibiting this year! Saying that we're pretty excited and I guess one of us is going to have to get a wiggle on and do some painting if she's going to have anything to exhibit this year!

I know, I know but crazy as it may seem to be booking exhibitions for 2011 but the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle have asked me to exhibit in their Autumn exhibition from September 2011.

So very excited about that as I really like the Biscuit Factory, such a good space and ideal for my bigger pieces. Also with the Saltaire Arts trail moving to May in 2011 I'll probably only want to book one more exhibition next year so that I can focus on producing new work for each event.

Still can't believe that it's only April 2010 and I'm booking exhibitions for Autumn 2011....

Took a trip up to Penrith today to look at the exhibition there. Really pleased with what the folks at Upfront have done, the work looks great. Although the exhibition finishes on the 25 April it's well worth a visit to Upfront as they always have interesting work on display and the food is just fabulous!

Changes are afoot....

I think we have some big changes over the next couple of years at 6 Harold Place. Firstly we are losing Mark Yates as he embarks on a career in the tattoo business. You can still see his work on his website though: www.markyates.co.uk.

There are also planned changes to the format of the arts trail. Basically the organisers are aiming to split the arts trail from the saltaire festival with the aim of doing this from 2011. So for this year they are asking whether we would consider opening up our house in September 2010, May 2011 or both.

So Nick and myself need to think through whether we want to do this yet and also whether we can afford the time to open up for one event never mind two. If we decide to go ahead we also want to think about whether we want to reduce the amount of work or maybe even the number of artists in our house especially as this will be the 4th year of us all exhibiting together - maybe it's time for a bit of a change?

A couple of completed paintings for the exhibition in Penrith. Top one (Fairfield) is one of two paintings.... if I have time there will be 3 in total which will then be called the Fairfield Horseshoe. They will be absolutely enormous altogether but will look pretty impressive... no idea what to do with them when they come back from the gallery as they're too big to display together in our house.

I've just had confirmed a solo exhibition with Upfront in Penrith from 30 March until 25 April 2010. I'll be producing a number of large landscapes which will include the Lake District for this exhibition. Very excited as this is a fantastic opportunity to paint BIG...

Bradford Open

The Malham Triptych is being exhibited as part of the Bradford Open until 21 March 2010. The Bradford Open this year is being held at the Industrial Museum, Bradford.

Nightfall over the Hebrides Series

The paintings are based on photographs taken one evening when a storm was coming in. The minimal light pollution resulted in a ghostly blue haze which inspired me to try and reproduce grainy, hazy, almost abstract paintings.

The use of oil paint alone didn't quite achieve what I was looking for so decided to experiment with glazes. Using layers of turquoise glaze transformed the paintings and immediately gave them the depth I was looking for. The finished paintings are quite atmospheric and have almost a ceramic effect from the glaze.

The series consists of nine 17 x 12.5 cm canvases and one 25 x 25 cm canvas (not shown).

Fairfield Horseshoe Triptych

Exhibition of Fran Jordan's Work

We are pleased to confirm that a selection of Fran Jordan's work will be exhibited at 6 Harold Place during the Saltaire Arts trail this year.

Fran exhibited with us at 6 Harold Place from the start of the Arts Trail in 2007 and her unexpected death at the end of 2008 came as a shock to us all and left us in a position of having to come to terms with the idea of exhibiting without her in the future.

Opening 6 Harold Place for the 2009 Saltaire Arts Trail will certainly be strange without her but we are really pleased to have her work exhibited at the house again.

Just been informed that the Gallery in Ilkley is to shut in a couple of weeks time which means my solo exhibition in July is now cancelled.

Really sad news as this was a fabulous gallery which always had lots of fresh new work on display.

Studio with a view...

I have a couple of exhibitions later this year which include a number of large canvases. The canvases are too big to get into the studio basement so have had to take over one of the bedrooms for the summer... studio now complete with two cat beds (!), tomato, aubergine and pumpkin plants... oh and sunshine!

Leeds Art Fair 2009
